WMed adopts Recourse for 3 years in AI curriculum integration
December 16, 2021
WMed offers the full continuum of undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education in Southwest Michigan. The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus serves as the primary educational facility, boasting a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. WMed's primary clinical affiliates include Bronson Healthcare and Ascension Borgess Health, who along with WMed Health provide opportunities for clinical education and training. WMed has 969 faculty appointed across 17 departments. WMed's mission is to educate and inspire lifelong learners to be exceptional clinicians, leaders, educators, advocates, and researchers of tomorrow.
The Recourse platform represents a significant breakthrough in clinical education, providing anytime access to fully conversational, voice-interactive Digital Human Patient avatars. Each scenario provides individualized feedback for learners, and the ability to portray patients of different heritage, culture, or background. The consistency of virtual standardized patient presentations over time creates a unique opportunity to prepare, assess, and remediate healthcare learners. For tutors, interactions are aggregated and analysed, producing performance insights across cohorts, creating a new paradigm in personalized education and data-driven curriculum evaluation.
The agreement follows a successful pilot of the platform focused on rheumatology, which led to an average student improvement of 24 percentage points and wide engagement across the participating cohort. The goal is to utilize this innovative platform to enhance clinical skills development including history taking, physical exam skills, clinical reasoning, development of care plans and interpretation of data collected during care. Early use in the curriculum will focus on history and physical exam skills with advancements to higher level clinical reasoning and diagnostic interpretations later in the curriculum. The advantages of patient care simulation, custom designs and immediate feedback for student development create opportunities for routine and focused learner development needs.
Michael E Busha, MD, MBA, Associate Dean of Educational Affairs, Chair and Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Education, and Assistant Professor of Department of Family and Community Medicine, said:
"We are excited to embark on this journey with Recourse. The technology and platform provide multiple opportunities to enhance student development throughout the curriculum. We have consistently strived for innovation in the curriculum and have heavily used our Simulation Center. The advantages of augmenting those experiences with this technology will promote student development across multiple competencies in the coveted asynchronous, virtual, immediate-feedback, on-demand area of education."
Dr. Scott Martin, Co-founder and CEO at Recourse AI, said:
“We’ve really enjoyed working with Dr. Busha and the team so far, and are excited to continue supporting clinical learning at WMed, an organization recognized nationally for their commitment to innovation and quality in medical education. We’re delighted to provide clinical learners across this prestigious healthcare system with anytime access to experiential learning and objective assessment through best-in-class Digital Human simulations.”
