Recourse, a Manchester based conversational AI start-up, has been named by Tech Nation as one of the top 16 most innovative AI companies in the UK. The start-up was founded during medical school by Dr. Scott Martin, Clinical Entrepreneur Fellow at NHS England and CEO at Recourse AI, alongside Maksim Belousov, PhD in artificial intelligence and CTO.

The dynamic team are on a mission to accelerate human performance using their AI-powered Virtual Human training platform, and are proud to be building on local alumnus Alan Turing's legacy as the "Father of AI", having secured funding from Innovate UK, the MoD, and reputable private investors. The technology has also won numerous awards including AIMed Europe Dragon's Den and the Venture Further Award.

“We’re really proud to be named in this fantastic list of companies. Two years ago, we started on a mission to provide experiential training remotely, ultimately to enhance patient care. Since then, the dedication of our team in supporting clinical learning globally during a time of unprecedented challenges has been remarkable.”

Dr. Scott Martin, CEO and Co-founder, Recourse AI

"It is likely that most people will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime, sometimes with devastating consequences" (Institute of Medicine, 2015). Unnecessary tests and treatments have been reported to cost the NHS £2.3 billion and directly linked to training, as the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges commented: "Deciding how and when to use these resources are clinical questions that can only be answered by those with sufficient training and experience" (AoMRC, 2014). At the same time, in 2018/2019, the NHS paid a total of £2.4 billion in clinical negligence payments to cover patient damages and legal costs (NHS Resolution, 2019).

In the UK, there is an urgent need for medical training beyond the traditional "see one, do one, teach one" model (Rodriguez-Paz et al., 2009), while globally there is an increasing shortage of skilled healthcare workers, particularly in resource-poor settings (WHO, 2013).

Artificial intelligence (AI), defined as computer systems performing tasks without receiving instructions directly from humans, has the potential to revolutionise both healthcare and education (AoMRC, 2019). Similarly to the "virtual doctor" that provides users (patients) with remote diagnosis and advice, "virtual standardised patients" support users (students and practitioners) by providing an opportunity for them to practise communication, interpersonal, and diagnostic reasoning skills through conversational interactions. Such simulations are engaging for learners, safe for patients and learners, and provide an opportunity for effective feedback (So et al., 2019).

This cutting-edge start-up believes their flight simulator for human interactions gives rise to a unique opportunity to support today's learners, by bridging the gap between traditional training and the moment they are asked to utilise skills in the field, cutting the number of days required to reach mastery.

Recourse AI – Conversational AI-Powered Training

Recourse AI is a Manchester-based deep technology company on a mission to accelerate human performance using AI-powered Virtual Humans for training. Founded by Dr. Scott Martin, Clinical Entrepreneur Fellow at NHS England and CEO at Recourse AI, and Maksim Belousov, PhD in Artificial Intelligence/Natural Language Processing and CTO, the dynamic team are proud to be building on local alumnus Alan Turing's legacy as the "Father of AI", having won awards including “AIMed Europe Dragon's Den” and “Venture Further”.

Recourse AI have developed a flight simulator for human interactions that gives rise to a unique opportunity to support today's learners, by bridging the gap between traditional training and the moment they are asked to utilize skills in the field. This cuts the number of days required to reach mastery in high stakes interactions such as human resources, or healthcare for example by enabling experiential clinical training to happen remotely, ultimately reducing the frequency of medical errors in the real clinical setting.
